Belchite is a small town in the province of Zaragoza and was the setting of a bloody battle during the Spanish Civil War. After the war, Franco decided to turn it into a living reminder of the enemy’s terror by forcing the population to abandon the town and move into a new one built literally next door. Belchite, already seriously affected by two weeks of intense fighting, was left to desintegrate for decades due to neglect and a probably true desire by locals to forget what the dictator had hoped people would remember forever.
