The first decades of Spain’s most recent era have been marked by overall progress in terms of consolidation as a democracy, governed first by the liberal party (PSOE) under Felipe Gonzalez and then a conservative (PP) one under Aznar. Spain joins the EU and NATO and increases its presence abroad. At home, a rollercoaster economy, domestic terrorism and regional independence movements prove to be constant challenges.
