The second half of Franco’s regime witness a Spain trying to break out of its isolationism and reach out to the world. The repression let up somewhat, but it was still very limited. The economy improved dramatically during the 1960s, and Spain’s middle class grew. But the 1970s saw renewed economic struggles, renewed repression, increased violence and greater dissatisfaction with the caudillo among the younger generations.
